Study: Greenhouse gases will delay next ice age

LONDON?? High levels of carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere mean the next ice age is unlikely to begin for at least 1,500 years, an article in the journal Nature Geoscience said on Monday.

Concentrations of the main gases blamed for global warming reached record levels in 2010 and will linger in the atmosphere for decades even if the world stopped pumping out emissions today, according to the U.N.'s weather agency.

An ice age is a period when there is a long-term reduction in the earth's surface and atmospheric temperature, which leads to the growth of ice sheets and glaciers.

There have been at least five ice ages on earth. During ice ages there are cycles of glaciation with ice sheets both advancing and retreating.

Officially, the earth has been in an interglacial, or warmer period, for the last 10,000 to 15,000 years, and estimates vary on how long such periods last.

"(Analysis) suggests that the end of the current interglacial (period) would occur within the next 1,500 years, if atmospheric CO2 concentrations do not exceed (around) 240 parts per million by volume (ppmv)," the study said.

However, the current carbon dioxide concentration is of 390 ppmv, and at that level an increase in the volume of ice sheets would not be possible, it added.

The study based on variations in the earth's orbit and rock samples was conducted by academics at Cambridge University, University College London, the University of Florida and Norway's University of Bergen.

The causes of ice ages are not fully understood but concentrations of methane and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, changes in the earth's orbit around the sun, and the movement of tectonic plates are all thought to contribute.

The world is forecast to grow hotter as greenhouse gases continue to rise, increasing threats such as extreme weather events and sea level rise.

Scientists have warned that global temperature rise should be limited to within 2 degrees Celsius to avoid the worst effects of climate change but delays in curbing emissions growth are putting the planet at risk.

Mathmadix: Legal Pot and "F*ck SB1070" - Phoenix Music - Up on ...

?Local rappers, Mathmadix unveiled the official video to their new single "Puff Pass" this past weekend. The video is the first look at the group's long-awaited album, In a Class of Our Own.

The song's pretty self-explanatory, but the video debut marks the first time the outfit dabbles in video production.

We caught up with rapper Knawledg for the low-down on the music video that starts with the disclaimer that, "all individuals in this film are medical marijuana patients."

Knawledge: The Marijuana law was passed here in Arizona that says you can grow 12 marijuana plants legally. So the song was inspired of course by that act being passed and you know, we're really big into supporting Arizona State law.

About the video:

That's something we're starting to do ourselves. We're much more than just rap artists, we're definitely a label. I think a lot of people think we're just rappers but we do pretty much everything on the scale. This is the newest thing we want to bring to the table -- video production. Most of the video production and editing was done by Deztined, who's also a producer. The beat on the song was made by J-Beam who's an amazing artist and producer himself. And you know we're just wanting to get into this video stuff to how it's supposed to be done.

You know there's a lot of people dropping videos right now. You can go on anybody's Facebook and Youtube and you'll see people going out in front of brick walls and recording videos, and that's cool you know what I mean? I respect anything people try to do to progress but, the Math, we like to portray a certain image and that's one of sharpness and clarity. We want to try to deliver the best product we can do.

I didn't want to go to overboard with the whole marijuana theme, but we definitely wanted to get the point across and still look sharp and cool at the same time. We were just trying to shoot for what would capture the eye which is very difficult because like I said, we're in an era where videos are being dropped left and right. So we want to stay original and stay fresh.

This is the first one we've put out, but we're looking forward to dropping many more.

Obama returns to Chicago hometown for fundraisers

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is returning to his hometown of Chicago to raise campaign cash Wednesday, holding fundraisers a day after Mitt Romney won the New Hampshire Republican primary.

Romney has established himself as the president's leading challenger, with wins in Iowa and New Hampshire.

Obama's campaign has hauled in more than $150 million through September, but Democrats say they will need to compete with Republican-leaning outside groups that can raise and spend unlimited amounts of money to back specific candidates.

Obama is expected to speak to more than 500 supporters at the University of Illinois at Chicago, with tickets starting at $44 per person. He will also attend a pair of pricier fundraisers, with tickets beginning at $7,500 for one event and $35,800 per couple for the other.

Analysis: Romney's rivals have little time in SC (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich and the rest of Mitt Romney's pursuers still have time to stop his rise in the race for the Republican presidential nomination. But not much. And not all of them.

Romney's first-place finish in the Iowa caucuses, even if by only eight votes, erased the embarrassment of four years ago when he spent millions and finished a distant second to Mike Huckabee. Now he leads in the polls in New Hampshire, where the 2008 primary winner, Arizona Sen. John McCain, is his wingman.

A victory Tuesday in New Hampshire would make the former Massachusetts governor the first Republican to win both the lead-off caucuses and first-in-the-nation primary in a contested campaign. "It's going to come down, as it always does, to South Carolina," McCain said Friday in Conway, S.C. "If Mitt Romney wins here, he will be the next president of the United States."

McCain didn't address what happens if Romney loses South Carolina and he was getting ahead of himself anyway. After all, McCain won in South Carolina four years ago, only to lose the White House to Barack Obama in the fall of 2008.

In addition, the economy's continued ability to create private sector jobs and the accompanying decline in the unemployment rate, reported by the government on Friday, is good news for the Democratic incumbent.

Even so, a Romney victory Jan. 21 in South Carolina, a state with a deeply conservative, evangelical-heavy Republican primary electorate, probably would assure his nomination at the GOP national convention in Tampa, Fla., this summer.

Which is why Gingrich hopes to create impossibly high expectations for Romney in New Hampshire ? how else to try to take the shine off what is expected to be a comfortable victory?

"Gov. Romney will do reasonably well here and it's probably one of his three best states," the former House speaker said recently. "But we'll see whether he gets a majority here."

Noting that Romney's winning percentage in Iowa was an unremarkable one-quarter of the vote, Gingrich envisioned a day when the race would "eventually come down to one conservative and Gov. Romney, and he'll continue to get 25 percent. By definition at some point in that game somebody is going to start getting a lot more votes than Gov. Romney."

Perhaps.

But for now, Gingrich, Santorum, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, Texas Rep. Ron Paul and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman all have visions of being the sole survivor of the competition to emerge as Romney's chief rival, thereby postponing the day it happens, perhaps until it no longer matters.

The calculation that New Hampshire is exceedingly friendly terrain for Romney also accounts for the decision by Santorum, the former Pennsylvania senator, to send most if not all of his new, post-Iowa harvest of campaign donations straight to South Carolina for television commercials. It is also why Perry intends to try and resurrect his candidacy there.

The New Hampshire campaign is well under way, and going into back-to-back debates Saturday night and Sunday morning, has proved to be a fairly genteel one.

If experience is a guide, that won't be true in the first-in-the South battleground the following week.

"Things tend to get nasty down here in South Carolina," said Wes Donehue, a consultant who worked for Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann before she dropped out of the race.

McCain, as much as anyone, knows all about that.

A dozen years ago, when McCain ran against George W. Bush, false rumors swirled continuously that his wife was a drug user, that one of the couple's daughters was illegitimate and that he had committed treason while in a North Vietnamese prisoner of war camp.

McCain lost the primary, and the nomination along with it.

In 2008, the victory he won in South Carolina sent him on the way to the nomination. "It took us a while, but what's eight years among friends?" he said jubilantly that night as he outdistanced Huckabee, Romney and others.

In fact, no Republican in more than 30 years has captured the party's nomination without a victory in South Carolina.

Given the stakes, questions about Romney's Mormon religion, his one-time support of abortion rights and other positions he once took as a governor of Massachusetts are to be expected.

AcerCloud Seeks to Bridge Windows and Android

LAS VEGAS ? Acer is hoping to make its Ultrabooks stand out from the crowd with AcerCloud, which will let users access their media from Android or Windows devices. The service will be available on the Aspire S5 and Timeline Ultrabook Series, as well as the new Iconia tablet with 1080p resolution.

According to Acer, AcerCloud securely transfers digital media and data to a personal space. It has three key ingredients: Clear.fi Photos, Clear.fi Media, and AcerCloud Docs. AcerCloud works similarly to iCloud. During a demonstration photos taken with an Android Acer phone automatically showed up on a Windows desktop, using the PicStream feature. With Clear.fi Media you can stream songs from your PC to your phone even if it?s asleep. AcerCloud Docs enables users to access Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files on an Android phone or tablet.

Acer says AcerCloud will become available starting in Q2 with availability in North America and Greater China. The worldwide launch will take place in Q4, at which point all of Acer?s mobile products will ship with AcerCloud on board.
