Thompson makes strong impression in Cards' bullpen

Local posts 1.29 ERA in four appearances

Brad Thompson
Cimarron graduate earned save in major league debut May 8

Brad Thompson was resting in his hotel room in Omaha, Neb., when he got the call.

His manager with Triple-A Memphis summoned him to the hotel restaurant to discuss a dispute over the bill.

"He told me the waitress said I stiffed her on the bill, but I said 'that's not true,' " said Thompson, a former Cimarron-Memorial High School standout. "He said 'I paid for it so you have to pay me, but don't worry about it. You can afford it now. You're going to the big leagues.' "

After a sleepless night, the baby-faced 23-year-old right-hander hopped a flight to St. Louis to join the Cardinals on May 5.

Thompson made his major league debut May 8 against San Diego, giving up a run on two hits in three innings to earn a save. He's 0-0 with a 1.29 ERA in four appearances overall.

Relying on a sinker -- his best pitch -- a slider and a change-up, Thompson has given up one run on four hits and a walk in seven innings, with four strikeouts.

"It's pretty exciting. It's a whole new world up here," he said. "Everything's better, from all the fans you get to the stadiums, the meals, the hotels.

"It's a great place to be and it's somewhere I'd like to stay for a while."

Thompson, who was mired in Class A two years ago and was thrilled just to be in Double A last season, acknowledges he didn't expect to reach the big leagues so soon.

"My goal was to hopefully become a September call-up at the end of the year when they expand the rosters," he said. "When I got the call to go this early, it came out of nowhere. It was totally unexpected."

Surprisingly, the 6-foot-1-inch, 195-pounder pitched sparingly in high school.

"I think that was something good for me. It saved my arm quite a bit," Thompson said.

He went 11-2 his sophomore year at Dixie State College, the only school to offer him a scholarship, and he was a 16th-round draft pick of the Cardinals in 2002.

Thompson made a dominant debut with the Double-A Tennessee Smokies last year, setting a Southern League record with 49 consecutive scoreless innings. His streak was 57 2/3 innings going back to 2003, a modern minor league mark.

"I was lucky last year to even make that Double-A team, and to have that start there put my name on the map," he said.

Thompson made nine relief appearances, going 2-1 with a 3.29 ERA, for Memphis this season before getting called up.

He made a strong impression with the Cardinals in just his third outing when he escaped a first-and-third, no-out jam in a 7-6 win over the Mets.

He gave up a go-ahead hit, but then caught Jose Reyes stealing second -- after faking a throw to third -- and retired Miguel Cairo and Carlos Beltran to limit the damage.

"That's another check mark in the column for him," Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "He was sent into a very scary situation, and he handled it with real composure.

"I've seen veteran pitchers be spooked in that situation, and he was not. That was a big plus for him."

Bruce Manno, the Cardinals' director of player development, said Thompson has exceeded expectations.

"He's been very effective and he has a chance to be a real good big league pitcher," Manno said. "He has a good sinker and he can get ground balls in key situations."

Fellow reliever Ray King raved about Thompson to mlb.com.

"Brad's got unbelievable stuff, and he's not afraid," he said. "He's got a nasty sinker and great change-up. I think he's opened some eyes, and knock on wood, I hope he's here the rest of the year."

Thompson said he just wants to stay consistent.

"The main thing is I'm throwing my sinker down in the zone and getting ground balls," he said. "That pitch has been working for me all the way up and it will be in my arsenal for a long time."

Ironically, Thompson has tried to model himself after another pitcher from Las Vegas, 300-game winner Greg Maddux.

"He's a guy I've always looked up to, especially being from Vegas," Thompson said. "He's a big control guy, changing speeds and making the ball move, and that's what I try to do."

Retailers value Google+ more than Facebook, Twitter

Google?s +1 button is reportedly more popular than Facebook?s Like button and Twitter?s Tweet button, at least amongst retailers. In other words, when it comes to social plugins, Google+ is already embedded on more retail websites than Facebook or Twitter.

The new finding comes from Darren Herman, chief digital officer at The Media Kitchen, a media planning and buying advertising agency. Herman worked with Evidon, which tracks online ad tags, and found that across 20 popular e-commerce destinations, the social plugins were implemented as follows: Google+ (45 percent), Facebook (40 percent), Twitter (15 percent), and AddThis (15 percent).

Here are the 20 e-commerce websites that were tracked: Best Buy, CouponCabin, Sports Authority, LL Bean, Gap, Dicks Sporting Goods, Bed Bath & Beyond, SVPPLY, DSW.com, Modells, Zappos, Old Navy, Disney, Target, Walmart, Gilt, Sears, Amazon, NewEgg, and Piperlime. This is no fluke; these are big names and they undoubtedly took a lot of time and resources to make sure they were making the sensible choice when choosing which social networking button to embed.

Six months ago, Facebook plugins were the most used, but the Google +1 button had already passed Twitter?s various buttons. I would guess Facebook is still first today, but only when considering all types of websites, and its lead may not last for much longer.

So, why is Google+ already winning with retailers? Well, by adding +1 buttons to their websites, businesses can potentially improve their Google search ranking. That?s something that Facebook, Twitter, and every other social network simply can?t offer.

Google?s +1 button tells Google that you like what you see. On Google+, the action can show up in your stream, but on Google, it could also improve a given website?s ranking. For retailers, being higher up on the search results page can be crucial, so they?ll do anything to increase their chances with Google.

Most Popular #SciAmBlogs Posts of 2011

OK, this is totally unscientific. On July 5th we launched the new network. Blogs that launched on that day only had about six months to publish posts, get subscribers to the feed, get noticed, get traffic. On the other hand, the original eight blogs did not have those obstacles but, on the other hand, had all the URLs changed on that date, which makes it really tedious for me to work out the actual total traffic.

So I poked around our stats some, aware that the date of posting, pattern of traffic (one big surge vs. continuous accruing of traffic) and other factors will determine how high they show up when I look for our most popular pre-launch and post-launch posts and that it is possible I?d miss some. Being holiday and all, I gave up doing fine-tuned verification of all the numbers and went with what I easily found. It is a mix of old and new posts, and I am only sure about the exact position of the first three posts because they really hit the stratosphere. The rest of them, yes, I remember they had great traffic, but I apologize if I messed up and missed a post that should be included, or the exact order of those I did include. This is not supposed to really be a ?Top 30? list, but more of a smorgasbord of posts that, for one reason or another, did well in 2011. Carlo Ancelotti takes reins at ambitious PSG

By JEROME PUGMIRE

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:21 a.m. ET Dec. 31, 2011

PARIS (AP) -Paris Saint-Germain took the next step in its quest for European domination by announcing Carlo Ancelotti as its new coach on Friday.

Having secured Qatari backing, and spent ?82 million ($116 million) on players, PSG's next objective was to recruit a coach of world renown, who will help attract star players to the club.

Ancelotti, the former Chelsea, AC Milan and Juventus manager, replaced Antoine Kombouare, who left his job earlier Friday even though PSG leads the French standings at the halfway stage of the season.

"I think I can do a great job to help PSG become a big club in Europe," Ancelotti said. "We have a lot of ambition. We want to win the title and take part in the Champions League next season. We want to make this club bigger than it is today, do the best we can in France and in Europe. We want to stay at the top in France and improve certain things."

PSG has not played in the Champions League since 2004, but was a semifinalist in the competition in 1995 and won the now defunct European Cup Winners' Cup the following year.

Ancelotti's appointment on a 2 1/2 year contract had been expected since the club's sporting director Leonardo met with the 52-year-old Italian in Paris last month.

"I'm here to bring my knowledge, I will observe the behavior of the players and I will add some touches if necessary," Ancelotti said. "I want good organization, a strong attack, a good defense. We will look to play attacking football."

Ancelotti led Milan to the Champions League title in 2003 and 2007, and guided Chelsea to the Premier League and FA Cup double two seasons ago.

"I did an honorable job with Milan and Chelsea, and I hope to do the same here," Ancelotti said. "At one stage I never envisaged leaving Italy. When I left Italy, I wondered how things would go. I found out about a new country, the way people are. I liked it and I hope to do the same here."

Ancelotti's experience and success comes at a price and protracted negotiations lasted two days.

Ancelotti and Leonardo spent large parts of Wednesday and Thursday together as they dodged reporters waiting outside the Parc des Princes stadium and photographers camped outside a Parisian hotel.

Leonardo would not reveal Ancelotti's salary, but it is likely to be much higher than any other coach has ever been paid in the French league, with local media reports estimating his annual pay to be ?6 million ($8.5 million).

"Ancelotti's salary is within the market," Leonardo said. "It's a price that other big European clubs would be willing to pay. There's a European market, but realizing this is new in France. I know its difficult for some to understand.

"But what drives this club is passion, not money."

Ancelotti could be followed to the club by several big-name players in January, including former England captain David Beckham, who is weighing up a move from Los Angeles Galaxy.

The new coach would not be drawn on which players he might target with the hefty financial backing of owners Qatar Sports Investment, who took over in June. He did admit, however, that he admired AC Milan striker Alexandre Pato, who is struggling to get into Milan's team.

"I don't know if it's a good idea to name names right now as these are players who have a certain status in their clubs," he said. "I didn't come here to completely shake up the team. It's in first place."

Former France midfielder Claude Makelele will take on a coaching role under Ancelotti, who was sacked by Chelsea in May after failing to win a trophy in his second season.

"The English experience helped me a lot, it was a fantastic experience, but there is a great challenge here with PSG," Ancelotti said. "The club has everything to succeed and enormous ambition."

QSI has been extensively using the Italian connection to bring PSG back to the top.

Ancelotti, Leonardo and general director Jean-Claude Blanc all have a proven track record in Italy.

Leonardo played for AC Milan before becoming a scout, helping the Italian club sign Kaka and Pato when Ancelotti was coaching the Rossoneri. Leonardo was named technical director in 2008 and took over the coaching duties when Ancelotti departed for Chelsea the following year.

Blanc was the chief executive officer at Juventus from 2006 and became chairman of the board in 2009. The Frenchman oversaw the financing for the construction of the new Juventus Stadium and took care of revenue development.

"Working together is easier when you have a good relationship," Ancelotti said. "It's very stimulating to work alongside him and Jean-Claude Blanc. We want to do something very big on an international scale."

WJC: Canada edges US in New Year's Eve battle

CANADA 3 vs. USA 2

Edmonton, AB - Just as they've done throughout the tournament, Canada dismantled its opponent.

But only through 20 minutes.

In a game called meaningless by many, the bitter on-ice temperament was as prevalent as always in a 3-2 Canadian win over the United States.

The US' loss to the Czech Republic meant that the visiting side was sent to the relegation round, while Canada had automatically advanced to the semis without having to overcome the disappointed, but driven, American squad in an intense New Year's Eve battle.

Nothing was on the line but national pride; and, sometimes, that brings out the best between nations brought up with winning inside-the-rink attitudes. On this night, again, and as they have been throughout the 2012 World Junior Championship, Canada was the better team.

16,000-plus cheered them on, lungs burning as the US' Jarred Tinordi picked up an undisciplined roughing minor 5:10 into the game. Wasting little time in rising the masses, Jonathan Huberdeau located Mark Stone in the slot, who scored his tournament-leading seventh 29 seconds into the power-play.

"It was a good start, but we know we have to play a full 60 in the semis," said the goal-scorer. "We talk about [having a good start] a lot. So far, so good. Nothing changes going ahead. We want to make sure that we're mentally prepared to start the game quickly.

"The coaches are telling me where to go to get the puck, and it's obviously working," he added about his totals. "I'm going to keep getting to those spots and Huberdeau, (Ryan) Strome, are going to keep getting me the puck."

"They prepare really well and they're going to come out and play their best hockey right away," added US goalie Jack Campbell. "Everyone knows that about Canada. Their coach made a great game plan and everyone executed."

It was as loud as it was during the Oilers' miraculous post-season run in 2006, and it was all that was needed for Team Canada to send the hometown crowd home with a smile and gold medal hopes.

But, in a blink, it was 2-0. Stone collected his second point, working the Americans down low with outstanding individual labour, pawing aside oncoming checkers and centering the puck to Jaden Schwartz alone in the slot.

Upstairs it went. The horn sounded, those 16,000-plus rose once more and the rout was on. For a moment.

With the crowd roaring, serenading US netminder Jack Campbell with a decibel-breaking jeer, Brett Connolly raced down the wing; no one else in sight but the goalie and a slim opening on his blocker side, which was picked with ease as the red and white established a commanding three-goal lead.

"We're happy with the win," Schwartz said. "It was a good game; it was tight-checking and it was good because we're going to learn from it. We're excited with the win, and we're excited for another round."

What they'll learn is the need to put teams away. Still up 3-0 in the third, the US stormed back as Charlie Coyle and Jason Zucker each tallied to make it a one-goal game, setting the stage to a compelling conclusion.

"It's good to go through some adversity like that, because we're probably going to face a little down the road," Stone explained. "It wasn't that tough [to remain focused]. We all had the right mindset in this locker room and we're taking it game-by-game. The US was our next one and we battled pretty hard."

"We're going to learn from it," Schwartz added. "At the time we weren't happy that they were taking it to us, but give the US credit, they came at us hard. It's a learning curve and it's going to help us.

"We had to relax a little bit and get back to our game plan. They were coming hard and we needed to calm down a little bit, start making plays and start making smart plays; chipping pucks deep and keeping it down there."

Canada will complete the tournament in Calgary, where and equally as boisterous, red and white-clad crowd will welcome them Tuesday night at Scotiabank Saddledome to begin.
